Join an atmospheric evening walk at former RAF North Witham, USAAF Station 479 and now Forestry Commission-owned Twyford Wood, to commemorate a WW2 aviation milestone.
Late on June 5 1944, elite paratroopers of the USAAF 101st (the famed 'Screaming Eagles') and 82nd Airborne Divisions took off from here bound for Europe to establish radio location beacons behind enemy lines in advance of the next day's D-Day airborne assault.
"D-Day was under way the moment the wheels of the first C-47 left RAF North Witham at 21.59 on the night of 5 June 1944."
Our walk takes us along the original concrete runways of one of the East of England's busiest air bases, responsible for supply and maintenance of all the bomber and troop carrying aircraft of the USAAF 9th Troop Carrier Command.
Imagine General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in western Europe, addressing troops that day to wish them good luck.
Large areas are now densely wooded, but the triangular template of the bomber airfield can be fully navigated and the walk will include the former control tower.
Meet at the Forestry Commission car park, accessible from A151, one mile east of Colsterworth.
We invite you to join us after the walk at the White Lion public house in nearby Colsterworth.
